Last Day in Astoria, Oregon

We went to Astoria Column in Astoria, Oregon. It turned out to be even better than Kevin thought it would be. It is high on a hill overlooking all directions. The column has 160 steps (I counted them) on a circular staircase. It was fun to see a ship go under the Astoria bridge.

Very windy but we could see Cape Disappointment. Soon, though, the fog started rolling in and we couldn’t see it anymore. It only cost $5.00 per vehicle to come here and it is worth maybe $5.00 a per person. The grounds are gorgeous and well maintained. Bushes neatly trimmed, wide open lawns, oversized chairs to facing the river, very nice plastic picnic tables, etc. We can see how people would come here just to relax.

The temp was equal to the average high it gets in the hottest part of the summer and we saw some people liking that – several families having picnics, others playing on the lawn, and someone laying out asleep on a blanket.

  1. I am proud to report that I got to spend a day in Astoria! When I was driving with my daughter, she said that’s a tower thing and I think it’s famous around here… I got to tell her all about it because I had learned about it here on your blog!!

Astoria is charming, it reminds my daughter of Maine, and I can see why. Crazy that it was settled in 1811, 35 years before Salt Lake City was settled. Lots of history here.
