Our home base house is just that….a place we can go to IF or WHEN we need to get off the road for a bit. Our current plans are to only be there a few weeks a year. This way we can get yearly doctor appointments done and things like that.
What is a home base? This a question you have to answer when you decided to be Full-Time Travelers. For the first 1 & 1/2 years of full-time traveling, we didn’t have a house anywhere. We had sold ours (in a few hours) and took off the next day to start our new adventure. 🙂
There are many choices when it comes to leaving a house (called “Sticks & Brick” in the RV world) and traveling full-time. Here are some options for your house: 1. Sell 2. Give to family 3. Rent 4. Use as a vacation home with a company like Airbnb 5. Keep and close up. Then a person needs to decided what they want to do if they sell or give the house: 1. Don’t have a place to come back to 2. Store things in storage or with relatives 3. Get rid of everything that doesn’t fit in your RV 3. Buy a piece of land (can add a container and/or hookups) 4. Get a campground lot 5. Buy a house & close up. Or other ways, as well.
For Kevin and I, we decided back in 2021 (after camping more than 180 days in 16 months) that we wanted to travel the country full-time. We wanted to sell our house and get a new place to go to that isn’t in the cold and snow. As a previous post said, we looked at all the options and even flew and drove to places to check out areas. We decided to have a house built in Arizona. The builder is building homes that have large RV garages. The floor plan we picked has the RV garage bigger than the living area inside. Kevin says “priorities!” HAHA It took a year for our house to be started and then 9 months to build. We didn’t mind at all… we were too busy traveling around the country. HAHA

After getting the home base house set & closed up we traveled to northern Utah for my brother’s wedding. We had a great week visiting with friends and family. The wedding was beautiful.

“Moochdocking” at my mom and dad’s house. 🙂
The wedding was on Saturday morning. We had the truck and HOWE (footnote 1) hooked up so we just jumped in and pulled out. The drive to Rock Springs, Wyoming was great and traffic was fine.

We stopped for the night at Sweetwater Events Complex. It has over 1200 camp sites, full hook ups, and a race track, big barns and arena. We followed the signs deep into the property and parked where it said to check in. Kevin walked a little ways to the care-keepers house. The man and lady were so nice and just sitting out on their porch checking people in. The cost was $39.00, full hook ups 50 amp, and just pick a site. “You don’t even have to tell us what site you pick.” We found one that had open sites on the sides and backed in. The depth of the site barely fit HOWE but we could park the truck several times over with the wide width. There was a barrel racing competition going on that evening. We thought we might go. It was fun to see all the horse trailers in the sites. Kevin asked his usual question of the care-keepers and they said their favorite place to eat, Applebees, was just too far for us to travel. HAHAHA Second choice was Marty’s. We had seen it when we passed. We went there for dinner. I had chicken fried steak Rated: “tastes like every other diner” and Kevin had a burger. It was so big and covered with too much BBQ, in his opinion. But, it satisfied our hunger. 🙂 By this time we were pretty tuckered out (tired). We didn’t go to the barrel races, just went to bed. Another travel day tomorrow. Very excited for our next stop! 🙂
Have to share this fun photo that made us laugh. Saw in Las Vegas:

- “HOWE” is what we named our Alliance Avenue 36-ft 5th wheel. See: Home On WhEels and we pronounce it Howie. We live and travel in it full-time around the country.
Congratulations on your home base! I hope it is all you desire and more. Your picture of the Wasatch Mountains is awesome. Safe travels, and keep having fun!

Thank you. Yes, the house is exactly what we wanted and turned out great. It will be nice when we need it.
The Wasatch Mountains are so beautiful. I like that the valley floor is around 5000 ft in elevation and the mountain tops are as high as 12,000 ft so you really get the dramatic mountains to see.
See you down the road! 🙂

Makes me laugh, too. We will “moochdock” at your place sometime. Still sad plans changed and we didn’t get to park in your driveway. Down the road…. 🙂
