Army Camels In The U.S. Southwest?

As you know, dear reader, our blog posts are usually around 2-3 weeks after it happened. They come from my travel journal but it takes about 1/2 a day or longer to whittle it down to be “small” so as not to bore you. 😃 Well this current week, I have been having a blast with my friend and we have been sewing/quilting from morning until late evening. So, I haven’t had time to whittle down our week that is next in line for this post.

That being said, I am going to post some pictures with brief words. Enjoy!

Camels in the US Southwest? Yep! Hi Jolly Monument. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hi_Jolly Interesting history and story of him.

After Quartzsite, we traveled back to Yuma, Arizona, for two weeks. I made this quilted wall hanging. Kevin and I found the colorful fabric at Arizona Market Place in Yuma.

One day we went to Colorado River State Historic Park. It is in Yuma, as well. We don’t think we have ever seen a belly dump wagon. This one is from around 1885.

Great advertising! According to the City of Yuma, it gets 310 days of sun a year. https://www.yumaaz.gov/business/economic-development/quality-of-life#:~:text=Yuma%20is%20the%20perfect%20destination,310%20sunny%20days%20a%20year.

  1. Lots of great memories here, for both you and for me from 2024. Although we didn’t check out historic park, so that’s for next time. Your wall hanging is very pretty. What are you making now that it’s completed?

    1. We are looking forward to going back next winter time and exploring more. 🙂 For sewing, I am making a pattern that looks like large shamrocks. It is turning out fun for St Patrick’s Day.

  2. I just heard about an area in NV called “Dead Camel Hills” bc the Army used camels to travel in the NV desert but they couldn’t survive the cold winters. Ugh! So sad! I haven’t done any research into it. This is just something I heard from a random hiker we met while hiking.

    1. I didn’t know about the cold. We learned the railroad came through and it was easier to move things on the trains than on camels. I never thought about them in the cold NV area. That is what I love- learning so many neat facts from people all over! Thank you for telling me about what you heard.

    1. Thank you! I have some fabric left over – you know Kevin always says to the cutter to cut 3 yards haha – and I haven’t decided what to make with it next.

  3. Your quilt hanging is absolutely beautiful! I love the colors! Too bad campgrounds in Yuma today don’t offer a free night if the sun doesn’t shine. 🙂 I am glad you are having so much fun!

    1. That hotel ad in Yuma still makes me laugh when I think about it. 🤣
The quilt hanging makes me smile, with the happy colors. Thank you, I am glad you like it.
