A Quick Overnight In Arkansas & Camping With Friends In Texas

Travel Day: We got up at 6:00 a.m. and headed out from Seven Points Campground, Hermitage, TN, as soon as we were ready. We knew there was construction on West I-40 around Nashville downtown. Every time we went that way, the traffic would be stopped, no matter what time. Even early on Saturday morning and the traffic was stopped. The longest sitting-stopped-on-the-road we think the entire time we have been full-time traveling. It took over an hour but we didn’t stress or anything. We figured we would be in slow traffic through there.

The leaves have really changed colors (this is end of October) just the past day or so and along Jackson, TN, they were very pretty. Little rolling hills but not as often. As we crossed over the Mississippi River, Memphis, we both let out squeals that we were no longer east of the Mississippi River! HAHA On the west side of the river, it looked like the land is river bottoms. Landscape was pretty flat from here.

Downtown Riverside RV Park, North Little Rock, AR 10/24

We got to North Little Rock, Arkansas, around 2:00 p.m. I read in the paper they handed us that this is a city owned RV park. Good use of land, we thought, because easy to evacuate if the Arkansas River floods. There is construction right near here on I-30 and the emails we got from the campground gave great directions. It was cute; it said to take I-40 to I-30 and then an exit. Then it says, “Turn off GPS.” They wrote that GPS takes you a long way around and they listed easy directions around the construction. Interestingly, Apple Maps took us the way they suggested. The area is pretty run down and we see lots of homeless people. The campground has a fence and gate with security. Yesterday I had made pasta salad for dinner tonight, knowing we wouldn’t want to unhook, and I also made pumpkin cookies for dessert. I started doing laundry as soon as we were set up because we didn’t have sewer hook ups at the last place and we won’t the next few places. We were right along Arkansas River and the walking bridge from our side to the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum is all lite up. Right as we pulled up, it started raining, hard. And right when we were set up, it stopped. HA We enjoyed walking around the campground and seeing the river. Saw one tug boat pushing a barge.

Travel Day: Another good night sleep and we pulled out at 6:50 a.m. The people next to us had pulled out about 1/2 hour before us and several others were pulling out, too. It was barely light outside. We headed to Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni, Point, TX. This place wasn’t on our plans but when our online church friends discovered four families would be in the area we decided to camp together here.

Dry Weeds Along The Highway, Prescott, TX 10/24

Let me back up, the roads just before Texas and the whole drive in Texas – the roads are horrible! Some points I couldn’t even read my book on my iPad because it was so bouncy. Grrr! We were sure something would be broken in our 5th wheel (but thankfully nothing was). The land was flat and wide open where the trees, much shorter trees here, have been removed for farms, houses, businesses, etc. We like the wider open feeling. At Prescott, along the border, the grass along the side of the road is very dry, tall, but dry.

Lake Tawakoni Campground, Point, TX 10/24

We really enjoyed camping with our friends. We ended up being pretty close to each other, with two side by side. We all took turns cooking for the group. We had lots of fun, food, and fellowship. HAHA Can’t wait to see them again, down the road.

  1. We only drove I-40/30 when we had to, which was only a few times over the years we went to Texas regularly–once during snow and ice but we had our 4WD Avalanche then and had no problems. It is a regular truck route, so the roads are always full of potholes and worn spots! I-20 is only bad in the stretch across Louisiana. You are the first person I know who has been to Lake Tawakoni, though I have seen the sign frequently. Love the night photo of the bridge at Little Rock!

    1. Glad you made it safely through snow and ice when you were on that road. Ice is so scary! Speaking of Lake Tawakoni, we didn’t do a thing there with the lake except walk along where the lake is next to the campground. Why? We were too busy enjoying our time camping with our friends. Eating, visiting, playing games, and all that sort of greatness. 😃

  2. I was surprised to read about bad Texas roads. I guess a lot depends on your route. When we had our motorhome we took several different routes here to South Tx and back home and always commented on how good even the secondary Texas roads were! I’m happy you didn’t shake anything loose on your RV.

    1. You are right in that it depends on which roads. Funny, we read and hear about a lot of people who say I-95 is just horrible. Well, thankfully, the roads have been fixed because we drove it most of the way from Florida to Maine and thought it was excellently smooth. 🙂 I am so glad roads are getting repaired! Saves a lot of damage to vehicles, that is for sure.

  3. Glad you had a great time with your friends! We have thought of staying at that campground in Little Rock – thinking of staying there and riding the bike trails. The area sounds a little sketchy though. Love the night picture of the bridge. You guys are sure on the move! Safe travels!

    1. I would suggest you talk with the campground to see their recommendations on the trails and such. I think they will give you honest insight. Thanks for reading! Yes, we sure enjoy moving around this big country of ours. So much to see and do! 😃

    2. Sorry to interrupt, but we loved the bike trails. There’s one park with guys sleeping along the trail, so I didn’t stop to read the signs for long right there, but otherwise the sights are super interesting right downtown and pretty farther along the river. I recommend them.

  4. It seems like you were really making tracks westward from Nashville! I think I’d be excited to cross the Mississippi westward too. My sister and her husband stayed at that RV park in Little Rock years ago and loved taking 8n the museums. That was 10 years ago- I wonder if it has gone downhill since then? Happy further travels down the road!

    1. We will have to go back and take in the museums there. Definitely on our list. We usually do all we want before moving on, haha, but this time we were in-between visiting people. Lovely!!!

  5. Camping with friends – how wonderful! I’m totally envious. We stayed at that downtown Little Rock campground right on the river, as well. I’m sorry you didn’t have time to go to the civil rights museum there or walk around the grounds of the Clinton library. So funny, I also did tons of laundry there, too. Priorities!!

    1. Priorities, indeed! 🙂 Yes, we plan to go back to the area and visit the museums at some point down the road. We were just in-between schedules and visits that didn’t allow us time to stay and explore. Next time. 🙂 Thanks for the museum recommendations.

      1. I think I remember you especially saying you didn’t know about the Little Rock Nine, the nine kids who attended a segregated school there when the federal laws allowed them but the locals hated it. A fascinating story! Next time. 💕

      2. Yes, you are right. We definitely want to learn more and visit there. I am so glad you told us about it. Thank you.
