Jerome, AZ

The day after Thanksgiving we were still camping with our friends, Wendi and Bob, and his parents at Clarkdale, Arizona. We all loaded up in Wendi’s car around 10:15 a.m. and went to Jerome, Arizona. Kevin and I had been here before, back in 2022. What a fun place. Jerome is an old mining town but has been kept up with fun shops and activities. It is on the side of the mountain and a lot of the buildings have slid. Even the jail has slid down around 225 ft! They even built a road to go around it. HA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sliding_Jail

We walked through a lot of shops and an ice cream parlor. We went in Wendi’s friends store and met her. Before I knew it was her store, we saw some nice wood carved ornaments of nativity. We purchased several for gifts. The pictures above are old brick molds. Who knew!

At The Blazing Owl we watched a lady dip candles and then carve and peel desert scapes. We were mesmerized! We bought a candle and an LED light. That way we don’t have fire in our 5th wheel. She said there are 3 people who make these candles. So cool to watch and support!

While the others stopped for wine tasting Kevin and I were hungry so we decided to eat at The Miner’s Cafe. The sign says, “7 steps down, The Miner’s Cafe, best breakfast in town.” Tiny place but warm and good food. I had French dip and he had eggs and sausage.

Everyone was done walking around and we were back at the campground around 2:00 p.m. At 4:00 p.m. we went to Cottonwood for pizza. The place opened at 4:00 p.m. and was packed but thankfully we got the last table. Kevin said it was very loud. He had salad and I had spinach artichoke bruschetta. Very good.

Back at the campground we sat around the fire pit. Wendi brought over a bag of presents for me: a whirly that is bright colors “it is happy and reminds me of you”, one of the first pottery she ever made and painted, a small wood board, like a cutting board, with “bee humble and kind” burned into the wood that she made, 2 boxes of herbal teas, and…. As I started to unwrap tissue paper both Wendi and Bob got excited. I quickly saw it was the white 3-D printed nativity scene they had made! She had sent me a picture and I about fell over because it is so cute! I was touched so deeply that they gave it to me. OH, the pieces are tiny and at one point baby Jesus fell out of the manager as I unwrapped it. Thankfully he fell by my leg and I was able to rescue him. HA

  1. Jerome has an interesting history re: poisonous gases from the mining years, and then the artsy crowd from California reviving the town. We visited there several years ago en route from Buckeye to Sedona. How nice of your friend to gift things to you that you love, Charla!

    1. It sure does have an interesting history. When we were there a few years ago we went to the history museum and learned a lot! One business that was a car dealership actually had an elevator to get cars from one level to another because the ground is so steep. Isn’t it fun learning all these tidbits about places?!

  2. You are blessed to have a friend who is talented at gift giving! How delightful! We visited Jerome once but it was many years ago and the kiddos were small. I probably avoided all shops with anything breakable in them! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ That candle is So Beautiful!

    1. You, my friend, are just as sweet. I enjoyed the book you passed on to me very much. You will hear soon who I passed it on to. 🙂
Oh yes, lots of breakable things in those darling stores. I see your point. 🙂

  3. Jerome looks like a nice town to spend some time in. I love the printed nativity scene. So simple, yet so beautiful. My favorite picture is the one of you and Kevin smiling. You both look so very happy!

    1. My friends just got the 3D printer and are having such a fun time with it. I am amazed what can be make with it. In 2024 when Kevin and I were in Tennessee at the Atomic Museum, we saw a full size Willie Jeep entirely made with a 3D printer. It looked and felt like a normally made one! Crazy. Ha
